Sofia sat stony-faced next to Stefan as Rafael drove them back toward Manhattan. “Baby, are you all right?” he implored, clutching her hand. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have lost it and grabbed your father that way, but I couldn’t bear to hear him insulting you.”

She was silent.

“Sofia, talk to me. I should have warned you that I have a temper.”

“Like I didn’t know that?” she muttered ironically. “Says the maestro who threw a chair at the second violinist.”

“Who kicked over a music stand and hurt no one!” Stefan immediately lowered his voice to a soothing level. “Are you angry with me?”

“No,” she admitted honestly.

“Then why won’t you talk to me?”

She faced him, eyes brimming with tears. “Because I can’t.”

He gently stroked her face. “You can. Whatever it is, you can tell me. Anything.”

“No, I can’t,” she repeated, half-sobbing. “I can’t share that with you. It’s too humiliating.”

“You can and you will.”

His vehement demands put her on the defensive. “Stefan, has it even occurred to you that your insisting we marry so quickly is getting us off on the wrong foot with everyone?”

“What do you mean?”

She rolled her eyes. “Everyone, from your cousin Max to my grandfather to my father, thinks we’re rushing to the altar just because you knocked me up!”

He whistled. “Whoa! Where did my ladylike fiancée just go?”

“It’s the truth! It’s what everyone thinks!”

“To hell with what everyone thinks,” he retorted. “They’ll get over it. We know the truth and that is all that matters. This is about you and me.”

“Well, it quit being about just you and me when you decided we had to get married in just a week!”

From his clenched jaw, it was clear Stefan’s patience was growing thin. “Okay, Sofia, you need to stop this. We both know you’re picking a fight with me so you won’t have to tell me the truth about your relationship with your father and why you’re so upset right now.”

Oh, he was so right. Shattered by his words and their daunting truth, Sofia glanced at the window, the tinted expanse revealing only blackness now, like the deep darkness, the emptiness, inside her own heart.

“I’m waiting, Sofia.”

She could barely manage to look at him. Half-choking on a sob, she said, “My God, Stefan! You don’t want a girl with daddy issues.”

Abruptly, she was hauled over the console and onto Stefan’s lap, his arms so tight about her she could barely breathe. “Yes, I do,” he said with devastating passion. “I want this girl, right here.”

And his mouth seized her, his tongue plundering deeply, thoroughly, ravishing her until, with a half-sob, she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him back, tears still streaming down her face. His hands roved her body, his thumbs flicking over her tautened nipples through the cloth of her dress. She gasped with desire and awareness. His fingers slid under her hem and moved high to caress her bare thighs. Sofia whimpered as need twisted painfully deep in her core. Stefan groaned and kissed
